Mission and System
The SAR-Lupe System consists of 5 identical satellites, which will be launched in intervals of 6 months. It serves the German Federal Armed Forces as a national reconnaissance system for monitoring areas of interest. Project sponsors are the German Ministry of Defense (BMVg) and the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement, referred to as BWB (Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung), Koblenz.
With its high-resolution radar SAR-Lupe provides a repetitive, worldwide reconnaissance capability with perfect picture quality, independent of weather and lighting conditions.

The synthetic apperure radar (SAR), which will have a spatial resolution of less than 1 meter will deliver up-to-date and highly detailed images from virtually all regions of the world. Data will be transmitted by a X-band transmitter and encrypted S-band will be used for telemetry and command transmissions both direct to ground stations or via SAR-Lupe intersatellite links.

The launch of the first of five satellites is planned for 2006 with a russian Kosmos-3M boosters with modified fairings to accomodate the large antennas. The overall system will be completed in 2007 to deliver radar images for the German Armed Forces for at least ten years.
